Smashing Walnuts “Cracking the Cure” Gala – This Saturday

I’m sure you’ve heard about the 10-year-old girl, Gabriella Miller, that passed away from cancer in October. Two days before she passed away, Gabriella told her parents that if she didn’t make it to her 11th birthday, she still wanted her parents to have a party to raise money for her foundation, Smashing Walnuts, to help find a cure.

Of course, she wanted it to be black, white and pink. This weekend on January 25th, her wish will become a reality at the Inaugural ‘Cracking the Cure’ Gala to Celebrate Gabriella Miller. Proceeds raised at the event will go to directly to Smashing Walnut’s very first research grant that will be issued within a month of the gala.

The event is sure to be an inspirational evening to remember, with enchanting desserts, music, dancing, a life changing appeal, and some very special surprises! There will even by an adjoining Gala for youth ages will 9-17.

The gala is open to the public.

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival to Be Held in Chantilly, Virginia

If you enjoy shopping for local arts and crafts, you will want to attend the much-awaited annual event, the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival. This year, the festival will take place at Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly to cater to residents of Virginia County.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival is a yearly show where hundreds of local artists and suppliers gather to showcase their creations. Displays of beautiful jewelry, tasty homemade foods, creative pottery and sculptures, as well as home décor and fashion line the aisles of the event.

During the festival, kids can be entertained by live shows, including puppets and storytelling. Adults will be able to lounge and stay for a while, enjoying live music by groups like the Potomac Jazz Project.

If you want to know more about how to make arts and crafts, there will be interactive demonstrations available, where artists show how to make paper, spin metal, and make wheel thrown pottery.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival will be held from January 24 to January 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday and Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Those who wish to attend may come to the 868 Estate Vineyards, 14001 Harpers Ferry Rd. in Purcellville on Saturday, January 18. Class will be held from 2pm to 4pm. The admission fee is $75, including supplies, instruction sheets and two glasses of wine.

To help women discover themselves more and learn ways to effectively handle stress, Group Therapy Associates will be offering a special stress management program specifically designed for women. More than a Mom is a stress management program that will help women understand the importance of caring for themselves and how to properly manage things in order to keep up with their goals in life.

Women will learn the benefits of caring for themselves and how that will affect their lives and their families. There will be tips and strategies on stress management and self-care.

10th Annual Christkindlmarkt to be Held in Lovettsville

What better time to give gifts and decorate our homes with sparkling lights than the holidays?  Everyone is looking for seasonal decor to adorn their homes for the coming holidays. With loved ones coming to celebrate the joyous season, it won’t be long before there are mounds of presents surrounding the Christmas tree.

To welcome the holidays with a fresh blast of cultural gusto, the Loudoun Valley German Society will be sponsoring the annual German Christmas market, the Christkndlmarkt. This traditional festival is sure to hold excitement for even the youngest of any family.

This year, the 10th Annual Christkndlmarkt will be held at the Lovettsville Game Protective Association, 16 South Berlin Turnpike in Lovettsville, Virginia. The Christmas market will be filled with various local crafters and vendors who will feature unique holiday gifts, Christmas decors and even Christmas trees.

There will also be a wide selection of German food such as bratwurst, Kartoffelpuffer, artisan sweets, Wienerschnitzels and Alsatian sauerkraut. Kids will enjoy visits by Jolly Old St. Nick, facepainting by Harmony Middle School’s German Language Club and a puppet theatre.

Five musical shows will also be featured during the two-day event. Threetwo-hour sets of live German/Austrian Christmas songs will be played each day.

The 10th Annual Christkindlmarkt will be held on Saturday, December 7from 10am to 6pm and Sunday, December 8 from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $3 for 13 years olds and above, and each pass is good for two days.

Inova Loudoun Hospital Offers Menopause Support Group for Women

Every woman eventually has to go through menopause. Typically, menopause occurs naturally with age. Women who enter their 50’s usually begin experiencing signs of menopause. However, there are others who may go through menopause as early as their 40’s.

There are a lot of changes that a woman with menopause has to endure as part of the natural process. Physical changes can occur as well as emotional and behavioral adjustments.  Ideally, women must have a strong support system in place to see them through the process as smoothly as possible.

Inova Loudoun Hospital is launching a free monthly support group for women with menopause. Totally Hot and Happy aims to provide a helpful environment to women who are undergoing menopause and for those who are still within perimenopause or the transitional phase. The support group will include activities such as sharing of experiences, presentation of valuable information on menopause and updates on latest treatments on menopause.

Totally Hot and Happy will be held every third Thursday of the month. This month, the group will meet on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Inova Loudoun Hospital, 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg. The support group is free and no registration is required.

Intricate types of clothing are very attractive due to their colorful designs as well as their complexity. One popular type of cloth that has adoredwomen across the world is the batik. At Round Hill Arts Center, women who want to learn more about batik and even handcraft one for themselves can do so during the Ladies’ Night event on Friday.

Glue Line Batik will be a colorful and artsy event open for all women. Miss Emma Casale will help women learn how to make their own crafted batiks. The event will be held at Round Hills Arts Center, The Hill High Orchards Building, 35246 Harry Byrd Highway Round Hill.

During the batik creation, participants will be using glue and acrylic craft paint on cotton. Colorful pillow covers will be made and even taken home after the event. All required supplies are provided.

The Ladies’ Night event will have a cost of $40 per person. Refreshments are included, and for an extra fee, you may take the opportunity to visit the Bogati Bodega for a glass of wine. The event will start at 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
