The Healthy Weigh Now | Dr. Kenneth M. Brooks, FACC

LoudounJulAug2015_Page_02Most of us are consuming too many processed foods, refined sugars, and starches such as grains, sweets, snack foods, etc . In order to regulate blood sugar, our pancreas secretes insulin to metabolize sugar (glucose). We don’t realize when carbohydrates are eaten, they are broken down into glucose, and whatever is not metabolized for energy is converted and stored as fat. When too many carbohydrates are consumed, the pancreas has to work too hard, resulting in insulin resistance.

This leads to a drop in blood sugar which causes cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, beginning a vicious cycle of overeating, fat storage, and weight gain.

The Healthy Weigh Now’s easy 3 Level Weight Loss Plan stops the cycle, promotes weight loss by using the fat your body has stored, and burn that fat for energy. Weekly meetings with our trained coaches guide you on the journey to a healthy weight. After weight loss, we are committed to providing you knowledge and guidance to maintain your weight loss for a life time. How Many Pounds Have You Lost? | Women Physicians of Northern Virginia

LWMMarchApril2015small_Page_12It’s now March and if you set health and fitness goals in January, you should be able to see some results from those efforts. Hopefully, you are starting to see some inches fall off and your clothes fitting a little differently, or you’re breathing a little easier with less knee pain.

Maybe you are still trying to get it together and move money through your FSA to accommodate your new fitness plan, or just plain having trouble taking the steps or time necessary to facilitate a change. Whatever your reason for not getting started, you still have time before those coats come off. There’s no time like the present.

Everywhere you look, there’s an advertisement about the quick success with SP or the “Skinny Pill,”and we can’t wait to see results with an INSTAGRAM-like picture of weight loss. 50-60 pounds has have crept up over a couple of years but,my gosh, we want it off in one month; a month with no other lifestyle adjustments. Think about how little information is available about the long-term effects of SP – does that sound like a smart plan?

The best fitness plan should include behavior modification; a dietary review and the help of online APPs and a nutritionist. Plus, we should consider exercise with the help of a personal trainer and supplements to provide vital vitamins and nutrients. We don’t usually think of the benefits of these changes unless we are already facing medical problems. However small changes in nutrition and exercise can have large effects on medical conditions such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome and high cholesterol.

Any elevation of blood sugar causes the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin goes into cells and binds at its receptor and absorbs carbohydrates (glucose) from the blood. The glucose is then stored in the liver and muscle for use later. Glucose in the form of carbohydrates (simple and complex) is the body’s fuel.

  • Simple carbs cause your blood sugar to spike and then drop down just as quickly, causing cravings for more in just a few hours. Examples of simple carbs are: white rice, white potatoes, sweetened soft drinks, cake, candy, cookies, chips.
  • Complex carbs give you a feeling of more energy, help with weight loss and keep you feeling fuller longer. Some examples of complex carbs are: fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes, yogurt, sour cream, cheese & milk.

Most people are born with a finite amount of insulin. As we age, the body’s receptors may not respond as well to the insulin that is released. This leads to insulin resistance, decreased sensitivity to insulin or Type II diabetes. Individuals with Type II diabetes continue to produce insulin, while individuals with Type I diabetes produce very little or no insulin. Making lifestyle modifications such as nutrition changes and exercise can improve insulin sensitivity for both types.

Lifestyle changes also affect hypertension and high cholesterol. Hypertension or high blood pressure may have multiple causes: genetic, smoking, obesity, kidney disease, age, diet, kidney disease, birth control pills, stress or tumors. In most cases, the cause of high blood pressure is unknown.

High cholesterol may be due to genetic factors, age, sex, family history and BMI (body mass index) with men and postmenopausal women at an increased risk. Total cholesterol values should be less than 200, with “good” HDL values >59 and “bad” LDL values <100 mg/ dl. Triglycerides are fats from the foods we eat and should be less than 150mg/dl. Increased levels of triglycerides are associated with heart disease, stroke and coronary artery disease.

Change is not easy, especially since most of our eating and exercise habits have formed over the years. The results of change are well worth the effort, however. Look at the results of the clients below: these two ladies will be the first to tell you their “change” was a journey that they knew would yield sustainable weight loss for years to come.

Adults and Braces | Dr. John H. Jones III DDS | Jones Orthodontics

LWMMarchApril2015small_Page_15Frequently adults ask the question,” What should I expect as an adult if I get braces?”

If you think you might benefit from braces it is probably best to set up an appointment with your Orthodontist. Ask your dentist for a referral if you do not have one and of course, we at Jones Orthodontics want to be your first choice when it comes to braces in the Loudoun County.

As you know, (We) Orthodontists are specialists. We are trained to fix problems with teeth that are not aligned properly. We diagnose and assist with preventive care for treatment of dental and facial irregularities.

While I attended Dental School, We (Orthodontists) are specialists. In addition to going to Dental School, we spend 2 additional years in school focused on Orthodontics to specifically help patients with fixing problems and their teeth not properly aligned. Initially after a consultation (which is usually FREE) we take X-rays and photographs in the office. We want to study the underlying bone structure.

Depending on what we find, a treatment plan is written and recommended to the patient. As an Orthodontist with over 20 years of experience, I have
seen the industry change – much of it for the better. Today we offer our patients many options for fixing misaligned teeth. A treatment plan recommended for our patients is recommended based on what we find as the options are numerous. Mostly we want to factor in and consider making
recommendations that benefit you and your lifestyle.

Amongst the factors used to help adults determine whether braces may be an option for you include the following concerns:
– Spacing: Gaps between teeth. This can happen because teeth are missing or as a result of teeth just not filling the “gap.”
– Crooked Teeth
– Overbites: Sometimes called “buck teeth” when the upper front teeth are too far forward over the lower teeth.
– Under Bites
– OpenBite
– Cross Bites

There are many types of appliances considered in our office – both fixed and removable. Each case is different and every patient and his or her lifestyle is considered as we make recommendations for a treatment plan. Generally, the severity of the problem will determine which orthodontic
approach is likely to be the most effective.

Fixed Appliances include:
– Braces – the most common fixed appliance.
– Special Fixed Appliances.

Removable appliances include:
– Aligners.
– Removable Space Retainers.
– Removable Retainers.
– Lip and cheek Bumpers.
– Headgear.
– Jaw Repositioning Appliance (often used for patients we treat for TMJ).

Food in My Braces – Oh NO! | Jones Orthodontics

LWMJanFeb2015-smallfinal_Page_17What can I eat and how do I Keep My Braces Clean?

Included in the orthodontic home care kit that we give every patient is a bilevel toothbrush, a travel toothbrush, a spiral brush, relief wax, a small mirror, floss, some floss threaders and a fluoride rinse. Along with this kit we give our patients an orthodontic diet chart that lists foods which may promote tooth decay when eaten by a person who is wearing braces. We also want to make sure that you schedule regular visits with your personal team of dental health professionals, your dentist, your dental hygienist and your orthodontist to keep your orthodontic treatment on track and to keep your hygiene at a level that keeps you from getting dental disease or tooth decay.

Dental disease (also known as tooth decay) is the destruction of tooth enamel along with the inflammation of the supporting tissues surrounding the teeth. It begins with a soft sticky film containing bacteria called plaque. This sticky film of bacteria lives in your mouth and thrives on foods such as sugars and starches. After eating, the plaque produces acids that destroy tooth enamel resulting in tooth decay. Over a longer period of time this same
bacteria causes gum disease or (periodontal disease).

After eating, the plaque becomes acidic and dissolves tooth enamel. In the early stages of tooth decay (white spot lesion) this can often be repressed with the help of fluoride toothpastes and topically applied fluoride rinses. However if enough enamel is lost, the tooth surface will break down forming a cavity otherwise known as tooth decay. Cavities can only be repaired by your dentist.

Periodontal disease is the infection of the surrounding tissues of the teeth: Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. This bacteria creates toxins that damage gum tissues by causing them to become inflamed and bleed. If the plaque is not removed it can harden and become calculus (tartar).

To keep your teeth and gums healthy, we recommend that our patients follow the suggestions on the diet chart and schedule a visit to their dentist once every three months for a prophylaxis (teeth cleaning). February is Dental Health Month. During this month I will be out in the community doing (free) dental exams in some of our local elementary schools.

If you or your family have not been to the dentist lately, it would be a good month to schedule an appointment.

Remember , take your child to the dentist at 3 years of age and to the orthodontist at 7 years of age.

Heart Smart Help For Her | February is Heart Disease Month

LWMJanFeb2015-smallfinal_Page_11Many believe the leading cause of death among women is cancer. If that is what you think, you are NOT alone. Unfortunately, you are not correct. The leading cause of death among women is HEART DISEASE. Yes, heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association heart disease is responsible for one in every three woman’s deaths per year. Worse yet, many still believe that heart disease is a man’s disease. It is NOT. In fact since 1984 women continue to die from heart disease at a growing and rapid rate.

So, you ask…What should women do to prevent heart disease?

1. Take Responsibility.

Women must take responsibility for her personal health and well being. Generally the care giver of her family, women are good at helping and encouraging others – family, friends but not diligent when it comes to her self. Every woman’s first defense and motto going forward must be TAKE CARE OF ME – FIRST.

The best prevention against heart disease is to understand the risks and treatment options if heart disease and stroke history are apparent. Ask your health provider questions. Before visiting the doctor’s o ce be prepared. Take a pen and pencil with you. Ask questions – lots of them and write the answers down. Share your family’s history with your health provider. The information shared will become a part of the permanent health record. Especially share the information if heart disease and stroke are a part of your DNA. Your health history matters.

2. Know YOUR Risks- At EVERY Age.

The older one is the greater the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Be diligent and focused. Recognize and honor your genetic make-up. If a family member has a history of cardiovascular disease, i.e. parents, siblings, grandparent – your risk is much greater.

3. DO NOT SMOKE, Not Now, Not EVER!

The evidence is overwhelming. Cigarette smoking and second hand exposure to smoking increases the risks of heart disease, lung cancer and stroke.

4. Keep the Pressure DOWN.

Hypertension also known as high blood pressure is the “silent killer.” It often goes without symptoms. Checking with your Doctor or health provider is a must on a regular basis – especially if there is a family history of high blood pressure. Heredity and increasing age raises the risk.

5. The Number Counts – Monitor Cholesterol.

Abnormal or high blood lipids (fats) are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. Blood lipids include the LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL and triglycerides. The lower one’s LDL and the higher HDL, the better. If one is at risk, check with your Physician. Diet may or may not help. Medication may be the best prevention.

LOSE 30 – 35 POUNDS with SEROTONIN PLUS | Women Physicians of Northern Virginia

LWMJanFeb2015-smallfinal_Page_12YES 30 – 35 pounds!!! Wonder how many of you, thought I was referring to the new “skinny pill”. You can’t turn on the television, read a magazine, or even read your Facebook posts without some mention of the new “skinny pill”. The new “skinny pill” is considered the magic bullet for weight loss. Its attraction: rapid weight loss without making any lifestyle changes or exercising. Consider, all our lives we have been told if we eat right and exercise that is how we will be successful at weight loss. Also, the adage that because you did not gain it overnight, you should not expect that you will lose it overnight. But we are not here to debate the validity of desiring a product which does just that. The SP I want you to consider is SEROTONIN PLUS. A medically supervised weight loss program which incorporates a meal plan, teaches nutrition and portion size, augments metabolism, assists with carbohydrate cravings, encourages exercise, and makes patients accountable. A program that has proven successful in more than 200,000 patients.

As an obstetrician/gynecologist, each day I discuss with patients, pertinent health risks and make recommendations regarding lifestyle changes that can impact their overall health. The visit starts with the nurse, who obtains vital information from the history and measurements taken such as blood pressure, weight and height. This information is used to calculate the patient’s body mass index or BMI. The BMI is a function of the height and weight and is a measure of body fat. A normal BMI is less than 30.

“the 12 week program includes supplements, vitamins…..and encourages patient accountability”

Selecting and utilizing a product or diet, without any lifestyle modifications can lead to failure. The scales work in your favor initially, but sustained weight loss will always be a struggle. Why? The body is very good at adapting to whatever environment it finds itself. You restrict its caloric intake over long periods of time and it compensates for what it interprets as starvation and becomes more efficient at extraction of calories for fuel and
storage of the remainder of calories as fat. The metabolism slows down and calories are held on to for future fuel. This is the reason why most fad diets, which result initially in quick weight loss on the scale, is not maintained once an individual stops.

Serotonin Plus is just one of the supplements included in the twelve week weight loss program developed more than 15 years ago by Dr. Robert Posner. Dr. Robert Posner is an Internal Medicine physician who practices in Burke, VA. As a physician who cares for the whole person, he was interested in creating a program which provided weight loss but also addressed some of the causes of an individual’s failure at succeeding and maintaining weight loss. He has expanded the program throughout the United States.

This twelve week program includes supplements, vitamins, encourages exercise, helps to decrease carbohydrate cravings, increases metabolism, teaches healthy eating through meal selections, portion control and provides meal planning and encourages patient accountability. Prior to enrollment in the program, each person receives an initial assessment to identify any risk factors, a review of medication history, an EKG, body scan, and chemistry panel. The program is supervised by a physician and consists of weekly 15 minute visits to follow and document weight loss, review progress, discuss weekly triumphs as well as setbacks but most of all to provide encouragement. At the completion of twelve weeks patients will have become much more educated on nutrition but most of all more attuned to what works best for them and identification of their problem areas. The program will have assisted them in meeting their individual goals and in most case, provided individuals with a road map for sustaining their weight
loss. After completion of the twelve week program, for continued success, participation in the Maintenance Program is encouraged. Maintenance consists of continuance of supplements if needed, free monthly body scans and coaching as needed.

Bite Me Cancer: Learning about Thyroid Cancer | Teen Cancer Awareness Week

LWMJanFeb2015-smallfinal_Page_14It’s not unusual to establish goals for the New Year whether they are personal or professional, but let’s face it, if you don’t take care of yourself first, you really won’t be too successful in either the personal or business arenas. Awareness of new medical information or trends can be valuable for future reference. Why should our Loudoun Women readers care about Thyroid Cancer? It occurs about three times more often in women than in men and it is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the U.S.!

The thyroid is the largest endocrine gland in the body and is responsible for controlling how quickly the body uses energy, making protein and how sensitive the body is to other hormones. Thyroid Cancers (there are numerous types) can occur at any age, but the risk peaks earlier for women (who are most often in their 40s or 50s when diagnosed) than for men (who are usually in their 60s or 70s). Surprisingly, even children are being diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer now.

Thyroid Cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age than most other adult cancers. Nearly 2 out of 3 cases are found in people younger than 55 years of age. Risk factors include a diet low in iodine, exposure to radiation particularly as a child and hereditary conditions. Each type of thyroid cancer has its own risks and growth rates and some can spread to the lymph nodes, bones, lungs and beyond. About 2% of thyroid cancers occur in
children and teens which brings us to Bite Me Cancer®.

In April 2010, Nikki Ferraro, who was a 17 year old junior at Chantilly HS, was diagnosed with a rare form of Thyroid Cancer called medullary thyroid
cancer which had spread well beyond the thyroid and lymph nodes. Two weeks after diagnosis, Nikki organized a Relay for Life team for the American Cancer Society she named “Bite Me Cancer.” Her team raised nearly $30,000!

The team name together with Nikki’s commitment to fight her Thyroid Cancer diagnosis as well as support other teens faced with any type of cancer
diagnosis took root. Nikki engaged in many discussions with her parents begging them to let her have a foundation, and in the end she won. In September 2010, she and her parents established the Bite Me Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit charity dedicated to raising awareness of and research funds for Thyroid Cancer as well as helping teenagers who are battling cancer.

You Don’t Need To Suffer From Acne! | Loudoun Laser & Medical Spa

LWMNovDec2014small_Page_16Don’t Let Acne Take Over Your Beauty!

The concept of ONLY teenagers being prone to acne is long gone. Recent studies have shown that roughly 90% of all teenagers and 25% of all adults suffer from acne at some point in
their lives. However, with the right knowledge and cure, anyone and everyone can treat acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a “pimple” is born when the pore
gets clogged with dead skin cells, and the acne causing bacteria propionibacterium, which normally lives on the sebaceous follicle. This excessive sebum production causes hormonal
stimulation of the sebaceous gland. Once this gland becomes obstructed, its lower portion is engorged with sebaceous discharge and keratinocytes. There are mainly two types of acne
that everyone is most familiar with: white and black head acne. A white head is when the pore opening remains closed – also commonly known as a “closed comedones”. A black head
acnebuilds up when the follicle enlarges enough to stretch the pore causing the trapped bacteria exposed to the oxidized air.

Thankfully there’s many ways to treat acne, and to prevent it from occurring.

Loudoun Laser & Medical Spa has built a complete platform to help you fight acne, and regain clear and smooth skin. Depending on the level and intensity of your acne, during your consultation our certified staff will design a program specific to your needs. We will recommend a platform that will be a combination of the following: IPL Therapy, Chemical Peels, and Acne Defense Products!

IPL Acne Therapy:

Loudoun Laser & Medical Spa has the state of the art technology to help you overcome your acne problems. We use IPL, “Intense Pulse Light,” an FDA approved acne therapy and a successful light-based therapeutic procedure that is now revolutionizing the treatment of acne. The IPL Acne Therapy destroys the most common bacteria that cause acne — without drugs, and without pain!

Acne Control Products:

Last but not least, our staff will arm you with the right homecare regiment. We carry the most effective products on today’s market for all skin types. Our aestheticians will educate you on which products will work best for your skin type and why, as well as give you a step by step direction on how and when to use each product.

Chemical Peel Acne Therapy:

Chemical peel is a deep penetration cleanse that uses chemicals to improve the appearance of skin. These chemicals are AHA (Alpahydroxy acids) including glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids which will reduce and even eliminate fine lines around the eyes and mouth, treats acne, eliminates acne scars, and will correct uneven skin pigment.

These chemicals are applied to the skin and sit for a couple of minutes. The solution will then cause a layer of skin to separate and gently peel off. The skin left is now smoother, healthier, and acne free! According to the University of Chicago Medicine, chemical peel is the best non-invasive treatment for acne.

Neck-less: Have You Ever Wanted a Tighter More Youthful Neck But Were Afraid of Major Surgery or Scars?

LWMNovDec2014small_Page_15Are you tired of looking in the mirror, only to see a turkey gobbler or asking yourself the question: What happened to my neck?? Many people have the same problem. After you have exhausted all the creams, exercises and supplements, we suggest a more effective solution: SmartLipo of the neck.

As we age gravity takes its toll; structures of the face, neck and body start to lose tone and begin to sag. Depending on the severity and the desired results there are now methods which are less invasive to turn back the clock.

One of patient’s most common complaints when feeling like they are looking older is that their neck is either fuller than they want, that their skin sags or both. In the past the most common method to address these concerns was either Liposuction (not good in patients with poor skin laxity), a formal neck lift requiring a more invasive approach including scars in front and behind the ears, or a combination of both procedures.

With two new, exciting procedures, SmartLipo or The Precision Treatment, the neck can now be improved with a minimally invasive procedure done in the office under local anesthesia, thereby avoiding high costs and hospital stays. This also means minimal scars near the ears, little discomfort and almost no downtime.

SmartLipo uses a high powered laser, in conjunction with small cannula liposuction to remove excess fat in the neck and tighten the skin with minimal scars and a very short downtime. In patients with minimal or no excess fatty tissue but with loose skin the Precision Treatment is ideal. Using the same high powered laser as SmartLipo but with a specialized fiber that allows bi-directional delivery of laser energy, the skin can now be tightened without skin removal and again with minimal scars and downtime. Another benefit of these procedures, not seen with the more invasive surgeries, is that collagen is stimulated making the skin look healthier and smoother.

Although not for everyone, the most common patients looking for these new procedures are:
• Patients who want results but aren’t ready to go under the more extensive, invasive procedures
• Patients who aren’t yet a candidate for a facelift and want more definition in their neck or along their jaw
• Cost-conscious patients & those who can’t financially afford a surgical facelift
• Patients who have already undergone a surgical facelift and are looking for a minimally invasive treatment to maintain their look.

To learn more about these exciting options to have a younger looking neck, call and schedule a complimentary consultation (703) 421-6000 or visit www.wherebeautybegins.com.

Why Fibromyalgia Sufferers Think Nothing will Help…

LWMSeptOct2014-Final_Page_10My name is Corey Malnikof, DC and part of my practice is strictly devoted to Fibromyalgia. Why? Because for years I have been meeting people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia who have told me about:

• Empty promises made to them by other practitioners that did nothing
• Being on so many prescriptions that they no longer know what’s real
• Magic potions, lotions, and blue glop…all of which did nothing!
• Pain, fatigue, and brain cloud that just won’t budge!

I felt for the people that told me about this. I wanted to be able to help. Not say that I could but actually help. I started searching through seminars and other practitioners for a “cure.” What I learned along the way is that there is no one cure. That everyone claiming to have a “cure” was the problem. Everyone was trying to find some magic solution, but the truth is that every case is different.
That’s when I started to develop my system for Fibromyalgia. It is an all inclusive examination testing everything from muscles, and nerves, to your adrenal glands and oxygen levels. What I have found is that when people go through my Fibromyalgia sequence, I can figure out what the problem is!
That truly is the hardest part…figuring out where the body went wrong. Once you figure this out, the treatments are not that difficult…they just have to be the right treatment.

Now, I started this article with: “Why Fibromyalgia Sufferers think nothing will help…” So I know after years of working with Fibromyalgia sufferers, that it is hard to make that first step and call the office and come in. I know in the eyes of those suffering that have already tried “everything” that I might just seem like just another bullet point to add to all those empty promises. That’s why I have two things I want to offer to show you that I am FOR REAL!

1) If you call the office by 7/15/2014 I will give you an absolutely FREE Consultation. (Take money out of the way so you can come in relaxed and just see what we have to offer.)
2) My guarantee. If you qualify for the program and get care and you don’t think it’s working for you…we will refund you every penny!

So my only question is…Why wait??? Call the office at 703.421-2990 and ask for the Free Fibromyalgia Consultation. You have nothing to lose….and a life to gain!
P.S. Want some more information…check out my fibromyalgia report: “The Amazing Truth Revealed-How 1000’s of Fibromyalgia Sufferers are Finally melting away their aches, pains and Chronic Fatigue Without Drugs and surgery and how you can too” -You can request it at Fibronow.com
